A cylindrical wooden pipe with a large cane reed, held vertically when played. The reed is made by splitting in half one end of apiece of cane which is then inserted into a clip which serves to regulate the reed tension. The player places approximately one third of the reed into his mouth, applies light pressure with his lips. and blows. The pitch range is low and soft. Used in folk music as a solo and accompaniment instrument, as well as by the wandering minstrels known as 'āseq. Also called balamān.
